An algorithmic perspective on the data

An algorithm analyzed a year's worth of data from three Scots pines, from 8-10-2024 till 21-9-2025. Based on patterns in the data, it recognizes four seasons.

Just like us, but not quite.

In 2024-2025, we had a mild winter, meaning that for the algorithm, winter (green) begins in November and ends in March. And it recognizes two types of summer days: moderate (yellow) and warm (pink).

The colour bar also indicates exceptional days, which are the basis for the Scots pine diaries. These days are unusual because of high or low trunk activity, a different type of day than the recognized season, the start of a new season, or a Full or New Moon.

The data clearly shows the relationship between the amount of sun, temperature, and trunk movement, which are necessary for photosynthesis and growth. The more sun, the less rain, and the higher the trunk activity.
